5 Basic Boxing Techniques Every Beginner Should Learn
The Building Blocks of Boxing
Every great boxer — from amateurs to world champions — built their skills on the same fundamentals. Get these five techniques right and you'll have a solid platform to develop from.
1. The Boxing Stance
Everything starts with your stance. For orthodox (right-handed) fighters:
- Stand with feet shoulder-width apart
- Left foot forward, right foot back
- Knees slightly bent
- Hands up, elbows tucked in
- Chin down, eyes forward
A good stance keeps you balanced, protected, and ready to move.
2. The Jab
The jab is your most important punch. It's fast, it sets up other combinations, and it keeps your opponent at distance.
- Extend your lead hand straight out
- Rotate your fist so the palm faces down at full extension
- Keep your rear hand protecting your chin
- Snap back quickly to your guard
3. The Cross
The cross is your power punch. It travels from your rear hand across your body.
- Rotate your hips and shoulders into the punch
- Pivot on your back foot
- Drive forward with your rear hand
- Return to guard immediately
4. The Hook
The hook is a curved punch targeting the side of the head or body.
- Pivot on your lead foot
- Rotate your shoulder and hip in unison
- Keep your elbow at roughly 90 degrees
- Don't swing — it should be a sharp, snapping motion
5. Footwork
Footwork is often the most overlooked skill in boxing, but it's arguably the most important.
- Move in the direction of your lead foot first
- Never cross your feet
- Stay on the balls of your feet
- Small, controlled steps — never lunging
Putting It Together
Once you have these basics, you can start combining them. A simple jab-cross is one of the most effective combinations in boxing. Add a hook and you have the classic "1-2-3" combination.
The best way to ingrain these techniques is with proper coaching. Bad habits picked up early are hard to break — which is why training with experienced coaches makes such a difference.
