What is No-Gi BJJ?

No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is ground fighting without the traditional kimono (gi). You wear shorts and a rash guard, and rely purely on technique — no gripping collars or sleeves.

It's fast-paced, dynamic, and highly practical for MMA or self-defence. You'll learn how to take someone down, control them on the ground, and finish with joint locks or chokes.

Our classes at Basingstoke Boxing Classes are open to all levels — whether you're a complete beginner or have some grappling experience, you'll fit right in.

Benefits of No-Gi BJJ

Practical Self-Defence

Ground fighting is where most real altercations end up. No-Gi BJJ gives you the tools to control and submit an opponent from any position.

MMA Ready

No-Gi BJJ translates directly to MMA. The clinch work, takedowns, and submissions are all applicable in a fight context.

Competition Opportunities

Compete in submission wrestling and No-Gi grappling events. Our coaches can prepare you for local and national competitions.

Mental Problem Solving

BJJ is often called 'human chess'. Every roll is a puzzle — you'll develop strategic thinking and stay calm under pressure.

Welcoming Community

Train in a friendly, ego-free environment. Everyone taps, everyone learns. We support each other's progress.

Rolling is intense cardio combined with full-body strength work. You'll build real functional fitness you won't get in a gym.

No-Gi BJJ FAQs

Everything you need to know before you book

Is No-Gi BJJ the same as wrestling?

They overlap but aren't the same. Wrestling focuses on takedowns and pins; No-Gi BJJ adds submissions (chokes and joint locks) and a greater emphasis on ground work. Many train both — they complement each other.

What do I wear to No-Gi BJJ?

Athletic shorts (no pockets or zips — they can catch and cause cuts) and a fitted t-shirt or rash guard. A rash guard is best for comfort during rolling. No special footwear — class is barefoot on mats.

Is it safe for beginners?

Yes. We train in a controlled, ego-free environment. Tapping is respected immediately and coaches supervise all rolling. You'll never be forced into anything you're not ready for.

How much do classes cost?

Your first class is completely free — no card, no commitment. After that, drop-in classes are £10, or monthly memberships from £40/month give you unlimited access across all disciplines. No long-term contracts — cancel anytime.

Do I need any experience?

Absolutely not. The majority of our members had zero experience when they walked through the door. Every class is taught from the fundamentals up, and our coaches are experienced at working with complete beginners in a friendly, ego-free environment.

What should I bring to my first class?

Just yourself, comfortable workout clothes, a water bottle and a towel. We provide all the equipment for your first class (gloves, wraps, pads). Trainers are fine — no special footwear needed for most classes.

Is there parking at the gym?

Yes — we have free on-site parking at Unit E7 Grafton Way. There are spaces directly outside the gym, so no faffing around looking for a meter or paying to park.

Where are you located?

Unit E7 Grafton Way, Basingstoke RG22 6HY. We're 5 minutes from Basingstoke town centre, easily accessible from the A30 and A33, and within 20 minutes of Hook, Tadley, Overton, Fleet and Andover.

What age groups do you take?

From age 5 upwards. We run dedicated kids classes (5–10), teens classes (11–16), and adult classes (16+). Most of our adult members are 25–50 but we have members training happily from late teens to mid-60s.

Will I have to spar or get hit?

No. Sparring is completely optional and only introduced once you have the technique and confidence for it. Most classes focus on technique, pad work, bag work and fitness — there is no contact with other members in standard classes unless you choose to spar.

How fit do I need to be?

You don't — boxing will get you fit. Every class scales to your level. Work at your own pace, take breaks when you need to. Our coaches are experts at meeting people where they are and progressing them at the right speed.

How do I book my free trial?

Click any Book Free Trial button on this page. You'll be taken straight to our booking system where you can pick the class and time that suits you. Takes about 30 seconds. We'll see you there.

Can I cancel my membership easily?

Yes — memberships are monthly rolling with no long contracts. You can cancel anytime through your member portal or just let us know. No exit fees, no hassle.
