Your First Month of Boxing in Basingstoke

Starting anything new is daunting. Boxing more than most — there are real physical and mental barriers to walking into a gym for the first time. Here's a complete walkthrough of what your first month actually looks like at Basingstoke Boxing Classes.

Week 1 — First Class (Free)

Your first class is completely free and designed with new beginners in mind.

What happens:

  • Arrive 10 minutes early
  • A coach will introduce themselves, explain the gym, and answer any questions
  • You join the warm-up — light cardio and movement
  • Technique instruction: stance, guard, jab, cross
  • Partner pad work or bag work applying what you've learned
  • Cool down and stretch

How you'll feel: Probably out of breath, slightly overwhelmed with information, and — almost certainly — wanting to come back.

Common worries that won't happen:

  • Being put with someone much better → doesn't happen, coaches match you
  • Being asked to spar immediately → never happens
  • Feeling embarrassed → everyone was a beginner once

Week 2 — Building Foundations

By week 2 you're already starting to feel less lost.

What you'll add:

  • Hook and uppercut (the other two basic punches)
  • Footwork basics — how to move forward, back, and to the sides
  • First simple combinations (jab-cross, jab-cross-hook)
  • How to hold pads safely for a partner

Week 3 — Technique Starts Clicking

Week 3 is when most beginners notice something shifting. The movements start to feel more natural, combinations start flowing, and you're starting to think less about what to do next.

What you'll work on:

  • Defensive movement — slipping and rolling punches
  • Rhythm and timing with the heavy bag
  • Building combinations beyond the basics

Week 4 — Fitness and Progress

By week 4, your fitness is noticeably better. You're lasting longer, recovering faster, and hitting harder.

Progress you'll typically see after one month:

  • Significant cardiovascular improvement
  • Basic technique is established — stance, guard, four punches, footwork
  • Coordination and hand-eye timing improving
  • Weight may be shifting if that's a goal

What You'll Need

For your first month, you need nothing special:

  • Comfortable workout clothes
  • Water
  • A willingness to try

We provide all gloves and equipment. As you progress, you may want your own gloves and hand wraps — your coach will advise when the time is right.

After Month 1 — What's Next?

After a month, most beginners continue with monthly membership (from £40/month) and start exploring other classes — Boxfit for extra conditioning, Muay Thai for kicking techniques, or MMA if they're curious about grappling.
